IBM Hursley Music Club Midsummer Concert 2011

The 2011 Music Club Midsummer Concert was held on the evening of Tuesday the 14th June in the Sunken Garden, Hursley Park. There was a wide range of music performed, from classical recorder duets to jazzy saxophone ensembles. The evening's full program is available here. The Clubhouse provided refreshments, including strawberries and cream and delicious Pimms.

The concert was hosted by the IBM Hursley Music Club, one of the oldest subsections of the IBM Club. Its aims are to encourage and enjoy the performance, composition, and appreciation of all types of music. The club has held midsummer concerts in the sunken garden since the garden took its present form in the 1970’s. IBMers, families, and friends are all welcome to join us, both to listen and to perform.

There was a retiring collection for the British Heart Foundaion in memory of Robin Cork, who died earlier this year.

Simon plays guitar

Simon Davitt - guitar

Simon Davitt from MQ played next, performing some classical guitar music:
  • Vals - Bartolome Calatayud (1882–1970)
  • Vals en re - Francisco Tarrega (1852–1909)
  • Endecha - Francisco Tarrega (1852–1909)

Mike and Sarah

Sarah Lewin and Mike Bailey - various instruments

Mike Bailey and Sarah Lewin played some duets next on a couple of instruments each (though not at the same time)! They played:
  • 2-part invention on Flute and Cello - J. S. Bach (1685–1750) arr. performers
  • Sonata for two recorders - Jean-Baptiste Loeillet de Gant (1688-ca.1720)

Blow! Saxophone Ensemble

Blow! Saxophone Septet
The penultimate act outside was the amazing Blow! Saxophone Ensemble, with David Lee from storage. They played a fantastic set:
  • Putting on the Ritz - Irving Berlin arr. Melanie Thorne
  • Music from James Bond - Monty Norman/John Barry arr. Andrew Worsfold
  • Bohemian Rhapsody - Freddie Mercury arr. David Lee

What do you do when you want to make more noise than a saxophone quartet? Form an octet! The Blow! Saxophone Ensemble is a natural extension of the core quartet for those occasions where sheer size and weight are required. Eight saxophones together is an arresting sight, and allows a wider palette of sounds. The group has a repertoire stretching from baroque through jazz to eighties pop classics, and an increasing proportion is arranged specifically for Blow! by members of the ensemble.

Blow! are: David Kinloch, Jen Lambert, David Lee, Joe Lodge, Sam Mason, Jemma Rice, Chris Taylor, and Andrew Worsfold.

Silent Jim

Silent Jim

The ever wonderful Silent Jim (with Ian Morton, happily retired from MQ, on bass) provided a suitably laid back ending to the outdoor section of the concert.

Silent Jim are a trio who perform acoustic versions of much loved songs from the last fifty years. Plenty of singalongs, feelgood songs and compelling vocals. Think Eva Cassidy, think Norah Jones, think U2...

Serving Suggestion: Silent Jim are an ideal accompaniment to sharing a good bottle of wine with friends.

Hursley Swing Band

Hursley Swing Band
Back in the clubhouse after the interval, Hursley Swing Band were on fine form, playing a great selection of old and new swing music under the direction of Tony Linford. A few brave dancers also took to the floor.
